How Travel Has
Informed My Life

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to many places all around the world throughout my life. When my sister and I were nine, my grandparents took us to China where we walked along the Great Wall and tried different foods. It was such an incredible experience and was really a formative moment in my love for nature as well as my concern for the environment. The landscapes were incredible, from hiking along the Yangtze River and seeing the hanging coffins to walking along the top of the Great Wall.

In China, I remember being amazed and inspired by the natural landscapes but also feeling a growing awareness of the impact humans had on the environment. When walking through Beijing and Shanghai, there were air quality warnings and seeing how crowded, hot, and industrial many areas had become made me realize how pressing climate issues were.

I’ve had similar experiences in other metropolitan area like New York City, and in nature preserves like Champlain Lake, Vermont, or in Bend, Oregon. Finding plastic in beautiful natural scenes and polluted living areas brings to light how urgent it is to combat the climate crisis. I want to continue to travel throughout my life and to always see nature undisturbed by man-made trash. Traveling around the world and seeing different environments has fueled my love for the earth and my drive to preserve it!
