Personal Interests
Crochetting & Knitting
When I have down time, you’ll never catch me without a crochet hook or knitting needles in my hands. I make bags, hats, and gloves as well as sew and customize clothing. Art has always been an outlet for me, somewhere where I can lose myself for hours creating whatever I see fit in the moment. I strive to find a way to include an artistic angle in anything I take on. It's a way I’m able to make things my own.
Crochet & Knitting in Action
The summer before my sophomore year, my former teacher, Ms Maxine, hired me to design an art curriculum for one of her students. I created my own knitting patterns for octopuses and taught her to create stuffed animals out of yarn. My role in this job opportunity was to learn how to design a curriculum plan and implement it in real life. I witnessed first hand how a student's mind comprehends information and new concepts through art and 3D design. I loved working alongside my former teacher and continuing to learn from her simultaneously.
Reading & Writing
I love to read and write and have enjoyed all the honors and AP English courses I’ve taken over the past few years. I find that taking time to put pen to paper, whether it be to write stories, poetry, or essays, allows me to organize my thoughts and combat problems or hardships that seem too daunting to take on alone. My appreciation for poetry has grown recently, both in writing and reading. The lack of rules and opportunity to write freely makes it easy to compose whatever I’m feeling at the moment, especially when convoluted emotions emerge as I apply for college and prepare for such a big change.
Hiking & Mountain Biking
In my eyes, art and nature go hand in hand. I am continuously inspired and challenged by the art I see all around me as I hike and mountain bike all over the country. This summer, a friend and I made it a goal to do at least one different hike every week. We went all over Penasquitos Canyon, Rice Canyon, and Ruffin Canyon Trail. I also completed a 20 mile hike over the Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge this summer and plan to do it again with a mountain bike. Over the past two years, I’ve been rock climbing with my aunt in indoor gyms and it’s been so much fun to work my way through different climbs and. I am also working on getting my lead climbing certificate so I can climb outdoors. I would love to travel more so that I can climb and mountain bike around the world.
Track & Field
In my junior year of high school, I decided to join the track team. It was something completely new and intimidating, but I felt I needed some change and stepping completely out of my comfort zone was one way to do that. I tried a lot of events: triple jump, long jump, hurdles, and pole vault, but ended up loving throwing. My events were discus and shotput and I competed in all the meets and made it to the first round of the North County Coastal League finals. Even though I joined late, I ended up loving it and am planning on returning in the spring.
